PawHome helps lost pets get home. To do that we handle information about pet owners, and about people who find a pet and contact its owner. This policy explains what we collect, why, who can see it and the choices you have. PawHome is run by , 162 Richmond Street, Charlottetown, PE C1A 1H9, Canada, which is responsible for your personal information. We follow Canada's privacy law (PIPEDA).
1. Information we collect
If you have an account (pet owners)
- Account details: your name, email address, phone number and password (stored only in a scrambled, hashed form that nobody can read).
- Pet pages: what you add about your pets, such as name, photos, species, breed, colour, age, microchip number, medical notes, allergies, medication, temperament and your vet's details, plus the contact details you choose to show.
- Lost-pet details: when you mark a pet lost, the date, the last-seen area and map point, any reward and your message to finders.
- Payments and orders: your plan, amounts paid, payment status and a Stripe payment reference. For tag orders we also keep the delivery name, address, phone and email. We never receive or store card numbers.
If you scan a tag or send a report (finders and visitors)
- When a pet page is opened, we record the time, your IP address, browser, device type, operating system, language and an approximate location (city or region) worked out from the IP address. The owner sees how often and roughly where their pet's tag was scanned, never your IP address.
- When you send a report, we keep what you choose to give: your name, phone number, message and photos, and your device's GPS location and its accuracy if you tap to share it. We also keep your IP address and browser details with the report, to prevent abuse.
- You don't need an account, and your name, phone number and location are all optional.
Everyone
- If you use the contact form, the name, email and message you send us.
- Basic technical logs our web server keeps to run the site securely.
2. How we use it
- To run PawHome: your account, pet pages, tags and the lost-pets board.
- To email owners when a finder sends a report and, on plans that include them, to alert owners each time a lost pet's tag is scanned and to send text or WhatsApp messages.
- To take payments, send tags and answer your questions.
- To keep the service secure and prevent spam, fraud and misuse.
We don't sell personal information, and we don't use it for advertising.
3. Who can see what
- A pet page can be seen by anyone who scans the tag or has the link. While a pet is safe, owners can hide their phone number, email and address.
- When a pet is marked lost, its page shows the owner's phone and WhatsApp buttons, the last-seen area and any reward, and the pet appears on the public lost-pets board with its photo, description and last-seen area, until the owner marks it found.
- A finder's report, including their exact location, name and phone number, is shown only to that pet's owner. It is never public.
- Our own staff can see information when needed to run the service or help you.
4. Companies that help us run PawHome
We use these service providers. They only get what they need to do their job:
- Hostinger: hosts the website, the database and our email. Our servers are in the United States.
- Stripe: processes card payments on its own secure page (Stripe's privacy policy).
- Twilio: sends text and WhatsApp alerts, when that feature is used.
- ip-api.com: turns an IP address into an approximate city or region when a pet page is opened.
- OpenStreetMap: supplies the map images in owners' sighting maps.
- Google Fonts and cdnjs (Cloudflare): supply the fonts and some page code. Like any website, they can see the visitor's IP address when a page loads.
Because some of these providers and our servers are outside Canada, your information may be stored and processed in the United States or other countries, and may be accessed by their courts and authorities under their laws.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety.
5. Cookies
We only use cookies needed for the site to work: one that keeps you signed in, one that protects forms against forgery, a "remember me" cookie if you tick that box, and one that remembers your cookie choice. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies.
6. How long we keep it
- We keep your account and pet pages while your account is open.
- When you delete a pet, its page, details, scan records and finder reports are deleted.
- When you delete your account, your account details, pets, tag orders and payment history are deleted from PawHome. Stripe keeps its own records of card payments, as payment laws require.
- Copies in backups and server logs are removed as those are replaced over time.
7. How we protect it
The site only works over an encrypted connection (HTTPS). Account email addresses and finders' phone numbers are also encrypted in our database, passwords are stored hashed, and card details never reach our servers. Only people who need it to run PawHome can see your information. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong password that you don't use anywhere else.
8. Your choices and rights
- You can see and change most of your information in your account, choose what contact details a safe pet's page shows, and delete pets or your whole account at any time.
- You can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it. If you sent a finder's report and want it removed, contact us.
- You can withdraw your consent, although we may then be unable to provide some of the service.
- If you're not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
9. Children
PawHome accounts are for adults. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you think a child has given us information, please contact us and we'll delete it.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in an important way, we'll update the date at the top and let account holders know by email or in their account.
